Network attached cd/dvd drive

New Around Here
Hello

I'm looking for a cd or dvd drive that computers can access on a local network. Just like a printer or a NAS. Ideally, I want to access the device not using AFP, SMB or the like, but using a non-binary protocol like http(s).
Does somebody know a device offering that?

Price is not a big issue :-) I'm however very concerned about the CDs/DVDs not containing viruses (it is a high-security network while the CDs are untrustworthy), hence the non-binary encoding in HTTP, and about confidentiality (hence the httpS).

Thanks!

I thought my Synology NAS with its USB2/3 ports might accept a DVD drive in an external USB enclosure. Nope.

The NAS does USB accept hard drives.
And it has an SD card slot I use.

So maybe you have to use a PC with the drive shared on the network.

As to your security issues, I don't know what you can do other than have the PC run some security software scan of the DVD on mounting, but that would take time.

You could also require that a CD/DVD be copied to the hard disk as an ISO image file, then scan that disk file. And if OK, it could go to a folder where users or admins can mount it as a new virtual DVD drive. Lots of freeware does this.

any media is untrustworthy so having https really doesn't do anything if you run said untrusted program on your computer and it's compromised.

most blu-rays have network capability but why not just share a cd/dvd rom from a PC that has a good security solution that automatically scans removable media when it's inserted?
