New 86u works fine except i cannot login to 192.168.1.1 to update and change factory defaults. All other sites can access OK. Its on the firmware it shipped with. Tried: reset, different browser, flush browser cache, reboot, disable antivirus/firewall. Now what, I'm locked out?

Thanks in advance.

Did you try browsing to router.asus.com or 192.168.50.1? Default login is admin, admin but typically goes straight to Quick Setup.

.50.1 worked and i did all updates successfully. i have never used that login... and thanks! always went to .1.1 in the past with 56u and 3100.

EDIT: .50.1 is only login to setup that works

ASUS made the 86U default IP 192.168.50.1 for some unknown reason. Of course, we all change it back to 192.168.1.1 because that's what we're use to and prepared for.

Nothing in the box that said anything but 192.168.1.1. Must have have missed something somewhere!

You should find reference to router.asus.com. Once in the GUI, the default IP is listed under LAN\DHCP Server.

router.asus.com doesn't work, curious, but I don't need it I guess

I had the same problem. Bought mine used and thought the previous owner had changed the IP address for some unknown reason. Opened Windows 10 power shell and typed "ipconfig /all" and looked for default gateway. It was 192.168.50.1. I left it as is. Didn't know ASUS had changed it. Works fine. Why did they change it?

because they can ..., seen seldom in the past too on their routers.
Why do you see a beta version 9.x.x.x DownloadMaster on the 86U?
Nobody can tell you and Asus wont reply on this (at least not me).

I thought it might be "security" related. The "whole world" uses 192.168.1.1 ... by changing to 50.1 it reminds dummies like me I can use a different address. One more thing for hackers to deal with.

Ditto with "admin" no longer being the "user id" on some of their routers.

This may be for security reasons especially in gaming routers. Both AC86U and GT-AC5300 routers are considered and advertised as gaming routers and as such they have their default IP set at 192.168.50.1.

Asus has been moving recent firmware releases to 192.168.50.1, possibly to reduce the chances of conflicts with existing network devices that use the .0.x or the .1.x subnets.

I guess I'm the weird one who uses 192.168.2.x... it was the IP address range that was used by my first router (an SMC) and I have used it ever since.

Surprised to see that Asus is moving to 192.168.50.x... it looks like it is already causing confusion.

Does anyone ever actually use router.asus.com?

Anyone who reads the instruction manual would. It's also the address written on the router sticker.

Now who would do a foolish thing like read the manual [emoji16]

I actually did read the manual for my latest router and I know about router.asus.com but I guess I'm old-school and still use the ip address to access my router' s setup page. A new router with 192.168.50.1 as the default would probably mess me up too until I ran an ipconfig/ifconfig to figure things out.
