New device connected

I use the Android app "ASUS Router" and have notifications enabled for new devices that connect to my Wi-Fi. It works as I do receive notifications. But it's not very useful because I get notified when known devices reconnect (e.g., a family member’s phone).

I’d like to receive notifications only when an unknown device connects for the first time, so I can review whether it’s legitimate or not.

All my devices are properly named in the router’s web interface (e.g., “Mom iPhone,” “Dishwasher,” etc.).

Is there a way to get notified only when a nameless or unknown device connects?
How do you guys use this feature?

I have RT-AX5400 with latest Asus official firmware

Check your mobile devices and disable random MAC.

What is the criteria for the app to send a notification ? Last night I got one from my old XBox. I suspect the XBox was in some sleep mode and woke up for a while during the night (I see it most of the time offline)?. But when I click on the notification, it recognizes the device and displays its right name.

That's an example where I would prefer to not receive the notification since this is a "known" and approved device on my network.

You mean “Wireless → Wireless MAC Filter” and listing all accepted devices? That should act as a whitelist and block everything else — that should work!

But this would force me to go into the router settings to disable the whitelist whenever I need to install a new device, otherwise it’ll always refuse to connect to my Wi-Fi.

I’d prefer not to block the device, but rather receive a notification when an unknown device connects. But maybe that feature isn’t supported…
