New Router (no Wifi) and Managed Switch is required

Hi all,

My asus router is packing
http://www.snbforums.com/threads/asus-ac68u-gives-a-half-of-200-mb-s-connection.35950/

My requirements are:

  1. We have networked the entire house with CAT 6 in wall cables around the property. There would be a maximum of 48 CAT 6 points

I want to break these into 5 Vlans, one each for home, office, guests, IOT connected devices and online purchases / banking.

  2. Two Ubiquity AP AC Pro, which will be connected to the switch. I want create three additional VLANS; one each for home wifi devices, office devices and guests.

These are on the same vlan as I do not have a switch.
I am looking for a router without wifi as it will be serviced by the UAP AC pro.

Router:

I have narrowed down to two choices, which are either Micortik or Qotom J1900
  1. http://www.msdist.co.uk/product_MikroTik-RouterBoard-3011UiAS-RM.php
  2. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01H01I1KC/?tag=smallncom-21
I like the Qotom route as I can achieve the following:
  • pfsense firewall
  • use this as a router (connect modem and switch)
  • attach a NAS
  • connect to a display
Microtik is also very good but the Qotom gives me more options down the line.

The problem is the Qotom URL does not provide me with a HDMI, USB 3.0 for NAS and Printer. I tried to identify a Qotom Spec with the above in vain as the eithernet gigabit has just one port.

Switch:

I would appreciate your help, comments and recommendations.

Thanks

pfsense doesnt support NAS so thats out of the question. What you can do is get a raspberry pi 2 to use as a print server though if your printer only uses usb.

The switch is fine as a central switch as it only has 2 SFP+. 4 SFP+ ports are better but only if you are stacking or will have 10Gb/s internet.

I suggest you use Qotom and the switch (if it isnt too overkill in port count). With Qotom it uses intel NICs so thats good. There is the option of using virtualisation and using both pfsense and freeNAS.

pfsense is not a NAS - and perhaps that is not what OP is asking for...

In any event - pfSense, Microtik, etc....

They're not BHR's that can do all that... but that ok...

Need a NAS - buy a box that does NAS, it'll do a much better job that a BHR...

Print Server - ok, a NAS can do that, much better though is something like AirPrint or Google Cloud Print services perhaps - and with some mad skill, CUPS can do this...

Connect to a display - well, no BHR is gonna do this - perhaps some NAS boxes might, but seriously, reset expectations there...

Qotom is a good choice, while the alternative is https://www.scan.co.uk/products/sup...c2558-quad-core-24ghz-ddr3-sata-iii-6gb-s-mot

Basically, I want to put a pfsense or an equivalent firewall and run that box as a router. I am not how Raspberry PI 2 will interface with the Qotom or C2558.

Let me simplify it:

Get a NAS / FreeNas and attach it to the gigbit port.
Modem will connect the box, whose extra ports will be leveraged to connect the NAS and the printer. Both will be made available to multiple vlans.

The 48 port switch will be connected to the router; all 48 ports will be taken up. The plan is to use ports 47 and 48 for UAP AC Pro or use the 2 SPF to connect the APs via the fibre/ethernet adapter.

4 SPF+ will be useful as I do not rule out buying an additional switch or keep the extra 2 spf+ as future proof. But, Ubiquity 48 port switches gets me only 2 spf+. The other two is just spf.

I am happy to look at alternatives.

Thanks all.
