No internet on 5ghz, but internet on guest 5ghz

Ok... this one is driving me nuts...

I have an AX88U-Pro. I have it set up with 2.4 and 5ghz bands which my phone connects to. I have 2.4 and 5ghz guest bands setup for my wireless devices (everything else is hardwired into a switch then into the router).

"Something happened last night"

Now, my hardwired devices are connected.
My devices on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz guest network are connected.
My phone on the not guest 5Ghz network connects with a no internet warning ... and if i try to browse the internet, I get DNS address could not be found.

I can switch my phone between the 5ghz guest and not guest network and the guest works fine, the not guest network gives me DNS problems.

I originally thought it was DNS Director problems because my phone has special DNS rules, but that doesn't seem to be the case because it works on the guest network, not the regular network.

My main router is using asus merlin 3004.388.8_4 and my mesh nodes are using 3004.388.9_2

Are the DNS rules set on your phone or the router? If on the phone, when you turn the rule off does the connection work?

If the rules are set on the router, did you MAC-IP bind for your phone to set the rule? If so, are you sure you're connecting to the non-guest and guest with the device mac (or vice-versa) and not a randomized MAC on one of them?

I just tried this... i set all the DNS Director rules for my phone to no redirect and I get internet back on my phone. If I switch the rules for my phone to user defined 2 (user defined 2 is set to 8.8.8.8 -- the same as the router), then I lose internet. If I set it to user defined 1 (which is 1.1.1.1), then my phone gets internet.

edit -- user defined 3 ... which is 8.8.4.4, no internet either.

Was Google DNS the one that you made the post about? If so, why would you want to set the DNS twice if the router already resolves that. But I'm glad you found the culprit.

Well, I'm going to switch the primary DNS on the router to one of those malware blocking DNS sites for 99% of my devices. my phone was on user defined 2 for Google DNS to have an escape route in case I needed to debug things. Just strange how user defined 2 blocked internet which is what was driving me crazy.

Could you try and change the DNS now to what you have in mind (or even 1.1.1.1), then set UD2 to google again and see if it works. Either way, you could also just set a secondary DNS in the router for fallback. If you have an Android phone you could also just set the DNS in the phone itself.
Reboot the router just in case after making this change.

So weird... set the main DNS on the router to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.3. Set my phone to user defined 2 in DNS Director (which is 8.8.8.8) and immediately goes back to no internet access. Switched it to user defined 3 (which is 8.8.4.4) no internet access. Set it to no redirection... connected no problem.

Weird, I have no clue man. No idea why it won't connect to Google. In this case I wouldn't worry too much if cloudfare works. I've had some weird happenings in the past as well and it's easy to let it bug you because of the curiosity. But I'd just set and forget:p

I'm going to wait until nobody is home and try to do lots of various resetting to see if maybe I can bring it back to how it used to work. It did work flawlessly "yesterday". Something happened over night which I don't know because it happened in the middle of the night and today I have this weirdness. Nothing is set to auto update that I am aware of, so just happened out-of-the-blue.

So strange.
