New Around Here
Dear SNB community,

I've recently purchased this router, coming from an ASUS Rapture GT6, which worked flawlessly. Everything seems to function properly with the new device, but I'm experiencing issues when trying to access Netflix, HBO, or certain websites both on LAN or WiFi —they simply don't respond unless I use a VPN or disable the router's firewall.

My technical knowledge is limited, so I'm unable to pinpoint the exact cause. However, I don't believe disabling the firewall or relying on a VPN is an ideal long-term solution.

I’m hoping someone has encountered a similar issue and can offer some guidance. Otherwise, I may have to return the router.

Many thanks in advance!

What router? What firmware? What add-on scripts?
Screenshots of settings?

Hey John,

Apologies, my computer knowledge is very limited. My new router is the RT-BE92U, and I've had problems with both the latest ASUS firmware and the latest Merlin firmware.

All settings are at factory defaults. I’ve performed a hard reset to factory settings with every firmware change, and the only settings I've modified are the ones required to get a connection from my ISP.

If you let me know which settings screenshots might help, I’ll provide them. As for addon scripts—I'm sorry, but have no idea what those are.

Many thanks for your help!

What country are you in? Who is your ISP?

Try going to your router's WAN - Internet Connection page and changing DNS Server from "Default" and assign it to something like "Google" instead.

Have you rebooted your cable modem? (in addition to Colin's questions)

Hi Colin,

I’m currently living in Spain and using O2 (Movistar) as my ISP. I’ve tested both Google and Cloudflare DNS, and everything worked perfectly with the Rapture GT6 before. However, the issue started after switching to this new router.

Hi John,

I’ve also rebooted the ONT several times, but unfortunately, it didn’t help.

I really appreciate your help!

Best regards,

EDIT: By the way, without a VPN, I can’t even connect to this website, Netflix, or HBO — but Amazon Prime works perfectly fine. If i disable the firewall here everything work fine without a VPN:

This is the most confusing part. The firewall should have no bearing on outgoing connections.

Do you / have you configured VLAN's for Movistar under LAN - IPTV ?

Is this a case of cloning the old router mack address to the new router? I don't know how Movistar works. Does the OP need to contact the ISP or withdraw old router on his ISP account. ONT doesn't typically need rebooting, correct?

Yes i did as it says here

EDIT: I've changed routers several times with Movistar and never had issues, i've always followed the same procedure. Could it be that the router is defective?

I can't tell if you are on stock firmware or Rmerlin's, so can we get a definitive to what the current situation is?
Have you done a WPS reset while on this firmware? (not a GUI reset)

I saw this message at the link you sent. Could it be related?

Stable but with some problem... I have detected that if the router firewall is enabled without configuring any rule, it is impossible to login on sites like aliexpress or with games like Startcraft II. Disabling the firewall it is possible to login without any problem. In other ASUS routers I had I never had this problem.

EDIT: At the moment, I'm on the latest Merlin firmware. I've also done a few resets using the reset button and reconfigured everything from scratch. I think the issue is related to the firewall — it's the only thing that makes everything work when it's disabled.

Nothing made sense because it was all due to a firmware issue. I can't believe I missed the beta firmware and wasted so many hours trying to fix it with no luck. I just don't understand how this router has been out for months and ASUS still hasn't provided a decent firmware. Thanks to people like Merlin, at least we have some hope of getting proper firmware. Thanks again for the help, guys!

Dear Jzchen,

The issue was related to the firmware. I installed the latest Merlin beta, and everything is working now. Thank you very much

EDIT: I post the screnshoot in case something is wrong.
