I recently configured PIA using directions they provided for the Merlin Firmware. Its working - but it appears the speeds are limited to 10 Mbps. When I turn the OpenVPN client off, my speeds return to better than 100Mbps. Am I missing something in the router settings?

Also - I'm curious to know what happens if the connection to PIA drops. Does the router drop access to the internet until a connection is reestablished, or revert back to the WAN IP? Just torrenting concerns...

I was able to revert back to old firmware today - so I am now running 380.59 now. I couldn't get the Asus recovery to work, but the Browser interface worked well. It took at least 20 minutes for the router to recycle after the firmware was uploaded.

What router do you have?

Do you have any recommendations for a router that can handle a OpenVPN connection at my ISP speeds of 180 Mbps?

Nothing consumer (or even pro-sumer). Even commercial products may have trouble hitting that speed depending on the options you have enabled.

None. The fastest Asus router right now would give you around 70 Mbps at best with OpenVPN. And there's also a strong chance that your VPN provider himself won't support such speed.

You'd need a business-class device, and HW-acclerated IPSEC to achieve anything near that speed.

Another alternative is to use PIA's VPN client software or grab any VPN client software and plug-in your login info and make the PC do all the encryption and handling while keeping your router free from creating the VPN tunnel and that may get you better speeds.

Agree - there are some specialist devices that can hit 100Mbs connections, but generally going above that, one has to start considering going back to the desktop, where there are more compute and memory resources available.
