OpenVPN on NT66U

I am going to flash my NT66U to Merlin and I want to install OpenVPN. Can anyone point me to a tutorial/guide to help me out? Some of the ones that I find seem outdated and they also seem to be for PC to PC connections. If I install OpenVPN on my router than are those tutorials applicable? If I have OpenVPN on my router do I even have to install any software on my home PCs? Isn't that all handled by the router?

Here is what I want to do:
  1. I want to be able to connect remotely to my local LAN/router from other PCs or (more likely) from mobile devices like iPads and iPhones and be able to run apps as if I am on my LAN at home. This way I won't have to do stuff like forwarding ports to view IP cams, etc. It should also facilitate RDP type stuff.
  2. I have a Virtual Private Server (VPS) in the Netherlands running Ubuntu. I want to connect this box up to my LAN so that I can easily mount drives from this machine to my home PCs and vice versa to facilitate the transferring of files.
Is this doable with OpenVPN or is there a better way to do this?
