Padavan's Custom Firmware for RT-N14U

A cheap Asus router now is supported by Padavan's project! A fast WEB interface, hardware NAT offloading, Entware\Optware one click deployment and other great features is coming.

Binaries will be available soon.

Firmware is available here.

Some notes about RT-N14U_3.0.3.7-074.

The "base" variant has no USB software, following applications are not included:
  • minidlna DLNA server,
  • transmission torrent client,
  • aria2 download manager,
  • firefly iTunes media server.
You can always install it from Entware or use "full" variant, where it's already included.

Another tips:
  • The firmware may be flashed from a stock WebUI, all settings will be reverted to default values.
  • Don't load a CFG files from stock firmware.
  • WAN MAC address will be different (plus two bits) then on a bottom sticker, if ISP got a MAC association, please put MAC address from sticker to WebUI WAN settings.
  • If something goes wrong please see a log first.
  • You may use a flash saving mode, where you may save settings by "Save" button, can be turned on from "Administration > Settings" page.
  • Partition label simplifies mounting, it always be the same on every boot.
  • Before Transmission/Aria2 first start please make a folder on USB drive. See WebUI tooltip for details.
  • Transmission Remote GUI is the best transmission client, ext4 is the best partition type for torrents.
  • Don't use torrents on USB flash sticks.
  • RT-N14U RAM memory is limited, so please don't start RAM consuming applications as a transmission, minidlna, aria2 at the same time.
  • UDP NAT h\w offloading is turned off by default, so uTP and\or other UDP high traffic form uTorrent may cause high CPU load. The best way is to disable uTP and you'll get ~0% CPU load on 100mbps TCP traffic. The UDP h\w NAT offload has some limitation, see 56U/N65U for details.
  • Wiki pages is here.

He's a Russian that makes an open source alternate firmware for the ASUS RT-N56U and RT-N65U routers. I'm not sure if Padavan is his real name, but that is what he goes by on the net.

The project page is: https://code.google.com/p/rt-n56u/
SmallNetBuilder thread: http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=7857

His firmware is considered better than the stock firmware from ASUS, and it looks like he just released the RT-N14U firmware 3 days ago.

Once nice thing is that you can try it out, and if you don't like it you can always re-flash back to the official ASUS firmware.

Andy Padavan has been developing this for a few years now, so he's not a newcomer. What I saw from him also indicated he had very good technical skills and generally knew what he was doing.
