New Around Here
Hi,
I searched the forum but can't find a recent direct answer to this. Parental controls are a mess out there.

Is there a way to put automatic parental controls on the guest network? Or use open DNS for the guest network and block Facebook, ticktok and YouTube while google dns is for the main network?

If so which router is best.

Welcome to the forums @Sak231.

What are 'automatic' parental controls? I don't think anything is available that does that on the Guest network(s).

Maybe Yazfi (guestnetwork script) can be used and think you can set what dns should be used for each guest network with that script. So I guess you can set it to use something like OpenDNS home or nextdns to block thing on your guest clients and the ability to use whatever dns you want for the clients on the regular network.

By automatic I mean not profile based. Someone logs onto the guest network and OpenDNS (or something similar) is used and I can block facebook, youtube and other social media apps.

If friends come over, they just login the guest network and they are good to go. I wonder why something as simple as this is so hard to find. The profile based parental control require manual creation of a controled profile per device, or you can manually add each device to the profile. It's a pain to say the least.

I think the problem here is just that YOU consider those particular apps and websites worthy of being blocked, but most specialized DNS providers do NOT. Things like ads, porn, etc., basically anything blatantly obvious, is blocked. But if you want MORE, then you're forced to create a profile in order to customize it to your satisfaction.

I want something better, yes. Thats why I am posting and wondering if there is a way. Routers allow you to block websites and choose your DNS settings. But they are global settings vs. Guest network/Normal network. I am quasi techie, but as I get older I don't have the patience for trial an error. Creating profiles is tedious, manual adjustments, usually in a companion phone app which is junk. Even still, if friends come over for homework or whatever, you have to stop what you are doing to hook them up vs just giving them a protected network key.

All the parents I know have basically given up on parental controls, I absoutly see why, so I am hoping for something better other than just getting another router which seems wastefull, and adds additional radio noise in the house.
