Is there a way to make permanent entries into the "Hosts" on the router? My edits keep getting wiped out.

Custom config files are supported with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware:
Have a look on the wiki page about Custom Config Files.

Of course you need to install Merlin's great modded firmware from here.
