PPPoE performance issue?

Hi,
I've been a long time user of Merlin on AX88u.
Recently, due to upgrading my ISP plan to 5000/500, upgraded to the BE88u (big part of the decision on this specific model was Merlin support).
Once I've received the new router, I've configured it using the official FW (auto-upgraded to 3.0.0.6.102_38151 on first run), using PPPoE for the WAN connection.
Doing the Internet Speed test from the GUI (under Adaptive QOS), I've got the full 5000/500 result.
After switching to Merlin, factory resetting and doing the same configuration, the test result was down to ~2.8/500 consistently.
To verify if the issue is with my connection or with the FW, I've switched back and forth between OEM & Merlin and the results were consistent...

Is there an issue with the PPPoE implementation in the Merlin FW?

Also, tried to search the forum for answers, got a bit confused regarding the GPL version Merlin is based on in regards to the Official FW version, so I'd be happy to understand how (if at all) they relate to each other.

Thanks in advance

Best practice is to run an internet speed test from a wired client device that is fast enough to handle the ISP bandwidth. Running on the router consumes CPU which can influence the results.
Also, typically if QOS is enabled, NAT acceleration is disabled which would give the results similar to what you are seeing.

Did the test on both firmwares multiple times without enabling anything, no QoS, no AiProtection, no nothing.
Just the first-run wizard to define WAN & wireless network, than Internet Speed test.
On Asus FW - full speed, on Merlin FW - got capped by something.
If the CPU of the router was the limiting factor, then I would get the full speed result on the OEM FW...
