New Around Here
So I just noticed that the status of disk one in my Linksys NAS200 says:
Volume Status: Disk 1 - Changed
RAID 1 - Ready (Journaled)
and.......
Disk 1 WDC WD5000AAKS-0 Idle
Disk 2 WDC WD5000AAKS-0 Used by RAID 1
...and only the disk 2 LED is lit on the front of the unit.
...so I think I have a problem, or at least no redundancy (RAID 1). I am currently copying data onto a PC with a 1TB drive for safety, but I think I'd like to get a real NAS. I got the NAS200 just cuz it was cheap at Frys many years ago. I have since added another 500GB WD drive and completely taken it apart, studied the cooling air path and wedged a 60mm quite fan into the side of it, and uncluttered the twisting air path up to the main board on the top. Its worked well, quietly and slowly, for 4 years.
So now I need to do something, and I'd like 2TB rather than 500GB. I still want RAID 1. I know its not backup, but it is redundancy, of the most commonly failing part in all my computers.
I also believe that power failures are a common cause of HD failure, or at least damage. So it has to be able to be shut down by my APC UPS.
I am I silent PC guy too. I like my fans and drives as close to silent as possible, as I will be in the office with the thing. This means I really want to use WD Green 2TB drives.
From doing a lot of reading here, it looks like Netgear is the way to go for me. This took a leap, as I have stumbled across a lot of bad Netgear routers.
So, is there a way to get the WD Green 2TB models that on are on Netgears approved list? Are the current ones working with the latest firmware?
Lastly, I am down to 2 units, the Pro2, or the Duo. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
