Hello, I attached a USB 3.0 drive to my d-link DSL-2750U router. Enabled SAMBA page in the router settings.

But when I try to connect from Windows 10: \\192.168.1.1

Windows tells me:

"The device or resource (192.168.1.1) is not set up to accept connections on
port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)"."

I uploading pdf print out of windows error.

What could be wrong?

Probably shouldn't - let it be a gateway/router/AP - it'll do a good job there.

It's not a fileserver in a real context - there are other options - even a single bay NAS will do a much better job - there WD/Netgear/QNAP/Synology have some very good options...

@sfx2000 no need to discourage the guy, a decade ago i tried to make as much use as i can from my tp link router. I had a mikrotik RB 450G as my main router and i used my tp link wireless N router as an AP and used openWRT on it to make more use of it. Routers nowadays can be mini servers to provide functionality for those who cant afford full servers without having to rely on the cloud services.

I always scorned at cable ISPs because of their poor upload ratios which was not limited by technology and their stingy bandwidth fair use policies allowed cloud services and selective companies to bloom and many have suffered from it too. Some things are very useful to have at a datacenter or at a cloud and some things you should keep to yourself. Theres always the cost factor and whether something is fit for purpose.

My joke is accurate, d link quality is usually terrible. I dont know if they've improved it but i always tell a dlink user to install openwrt because its the only way their products can be safely used. Not sure if they've learnt their lesson in security and quality but we'll see. In the mean time openwrt works a lot better.

Hello,

The Windows diagnostic says:

"The device or resource (192.168.1.1) is not set up to accept connections on
port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)"."

Is there something in the router settings that could prevent it from accepting connections from Windows? Any help would be appreciated. There are posts elsewhere that seem to indicate people were able to get USB drive sharing work well with this particular d-link router.

There may be some more configuration required or the drive format/size may not be supported. We need some more information on the drive you're trying to connect.

It's an auth issue between Windows and the version of Samba running on the device...

The preferred way is to fix samba itself, but the client workaround as pointed out by John9527 also works...

Wow, just read about this. Interesting--didn't know about this in Win 10.
