Router VLAN performance testing

Tim,

It occurred to me the other day while reading a request for help on a different thread, you don't have Lan-Lan performance on routers that support vlans. Is this something you could go back and test/add? If vlans are used, the router will have to do some kind of layer-3 processing, which will tax the cpu, since I highly doubt most SMB products have ASICs capable of layer-3 processing.

VLANS are actually Layer 2. Capability is generally built into the switch chip, so there is no CPU loading.

The segregation of vlans is a layer 2 function. But routing traffic BETWEEN vlans would be a layer-3 function. This routed traffic between vlans was what I was hoping to see tested.

Thanks,
Tam

Next time we test one that supports routing between VLANs, we'll see if we can include a quick test.

I was glad to see that Doug tested lan1-lan2 and vlan1-vlan2 performance on his Zyxel USG100 review. Thanks!
