RT AC56U PPPoA VPI/VCI

Hi, trying to connect the AC56U to a TP LINK 8817 and need to use Bridge Mode to avoid the dual NAT problem. The problem is the AC56U with suplied firmware does not support PPPoA and also does not seem to to be anywhere to put in the VPI/VCI. I guess the PPPoA issue is because it is not as common as PPPoE but not having VPI/VCI is essential.

I am in the UK so also keen to know if the Merlin firmware will work for my AC56U, I read something about some country specific models no working with Merlin;(.

Will the Merlin firmware allow PPPoE and input of VPI/VCI?

Ben

i believe your modem needs to support ppoe to ppoa
and has nothing to do with the rt-ac56u

you are far better off getting an asus with a built in modem

The Modem supports PPPoA, the AC56U with original firmware only allows you to use PPPoE. I am of confused you. I am attempting to use the modem in bridged mode and use the AC56U to do the PPPoA (I was hoping the Merlin software supported PPPoA.

Buying a new modem is not an option. The ASUS one with ADSL is too expensive and I have just brought a AC56U. Looks like I am screwed;(.

You cannot full bridge PPPoA, it has to be handled by the device with the phone line which has the A endpoint. Many modems have some form of half-bridge which does pass the real internet WAN IP to the Ethernet router, one method is to convert PPPoA to PPPoE in the modem, others use dhcp between modem and router. If there is no half-bridge in the modem config you will be stuck with double nat, which is usable when you can define the Ethernet router as the DMZ of the modem.

I have tried punting a ADSL router (the original one I got before I tried to 8817) in the DMZ but still got the double NAT error as I wanted to use the DDNS on the AC57U. Maybe I need to turn off DHCP server and use static IP on modem?

You need to get a Draytek vigor 120 v2.
Connect the vigor to the phone line and the wan cable to the wan port of the router.
Select ppoe in the router and enter dsl user name and password and you are done.
I have the same setup running for over 2 years. Tried other devices nothing comes close to the tiny Draytek modem, you don't even have to configure anything in the modem as it comes setup for the UK, it can run in brige mode or not ,either way it just works .
It cost about £50 on amazon.

Do you use to VPN server no the AC56U?

Yes,ddns, vpn server etc, and dual NAT, i use my modem in dhcp mode instead of bridge mode, this way i can access the modem (192.168.2.1 ) in my 192.168.1.xx network.
the only thing you need to change in the modem is the modem user name and password login credentials, everything else comes preconfigured.
