New Around Here
hi all,
Long time lurker here and many special thanks to RMerlin for the work he has done.
In regards to my experience, I have an advanced knowledge of networking and network security including wireless.
I have a very specific issue that is escaping me, and it's a real stumper.
I am at work at the moment, but I will try to describe the problem, then submit a second post with hardware and configuration data, when i get home.
I have a Verizon WIFI router/Gateway for FIOS, i can access and configure settings but the Passthrough option that Verizon techs can perform is a nogo for my situation.
This gateway is then connected via 2.4 ghz wifi bridge to the ASUS RT-AC66U in media bridge mode so serve my network devices on another level of the house, providing ethernet connections over the bridge to those devices.
I am using RT-AC66U RMerlin firmware from DEC 2014 or JAN 2015, I will be able to provide excat version later. This issue has been occuring over several version including the firmware based on the 2013 wifi drivers in the ASUS base firmware(new versions of RMerlin firware run the updated 2014 wifi drivers).
All connections over the bridge and on the eth segment have static ips in the 192.168.1.* subnet.
DNS in both devices are set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS)
Ok, background and config done. Here's the issue. I have great connections, fast speed. About 1-2 times a week or more i have to "refresh the connection to the bridge via WIFI in the ASUS login. During a session of netflix, the endpoints on the eth connections loose "internet access" according to win7(the simple test of can it reach the MS server for DNS and download a small file). This being said i can login to all devices back and forth on the bridge no problem, even the Verizon gateway. The funny thing is if the wifi bridge went down, this would not happen, this is not a case for disconnection and disassociation of the network. Its almost as if the internet packets cease to transfer over the bridge to the ASUS router and eth endpoints.
I will reiterate, I still have a active connection to the 192. network, just not the internet, no dns resolution and no packets transfer out of the network to the internet , but still associated and authenticated to the WIFI bridge provided by the Verizon router. The only way to remediate this issue is to "Apply settings" or "reboot to apply settings" in the ASUS router.
During a netflix "show marathon" about 1 season long(13 episodes,30 minutes a piece) last night, I had to reboot the ASUS RT-AC66U about 6 times.
I hope this is enough to get the wheels turning out there. I have never encountered such a thing. Usually, and correct me if i'm wrong, network WIFI issues, its either all or nothing, connected or not, but not semi and no packet travel.
Troubleshooting performed, all host firewalls down, but i have not tried an actually packet capture with Wireshark or the like yet.
any ideas? More to come and thank you in advance.
