I just got a great deal from Newegg on the RT-AC68R ($57 after rebate and discount) and could not resist.
I currently have a RT-AC68U H/W Ver A2 and it has been working fine for a long time.
I seem to remember that Ver A1 was not recommended for some reason but can't find why and where it was discussed...

Does Merlin firmware work with rt-ac68r A1 ?
Anybody has good or bad experience with that particular hardware version ?

I have not opened it yet so I could return it.

Merlin firmware supports the A1. As far as i know, the hardware differences are mostly to do with a bit of extra shielding.... $57 sounds like quite a good deal still........ 800Mhz dual core same as the A2. Maybe you would have potential issues with some attached drives.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I have been looking around more and it looks like you are right that the only difference is the shielding on USB ports.
The A1 might have interference on the 2.4 Ghz band if using the USB3 port without proper cabling...
I think I will keep it as I don't plan on using that port anyway.
