Just FYI, I didn't get it working for my DSL-AC68U with PPPOE connection on any port on any of these firmwares: 380.63-380.64-380.65Beta1,4. For some reasons, it just keeps saying WAN is not connected, while the LED of LAN port that is set to be WAN port is on.
this using the offical firmware?

I haven't tried this using official firmware, but only tried with RMerlin's firmware. Did you get both working? Which one did you install first?

well try official firmware as when using mirlin on dsl ac68u as there is bugs with it as its not 100% working with dsl ac68u in my experiences the wan connects dont work so i asume this for all wan types

So, as of now, one cannot turn DSL-AC68U to work as Merlin firmware on RT-AC68U? I won't try stock firmware of RT-AC68U since both stock firmwares are just as bad. Is there any reason, that I am not aware of, why one would use stock firmware of RT-AC68U on DSL-AC68U?

I had the same problem, found out it is indeed possible to downgrade/flash stock RT-AC68 firmware (like the latest 3.0.0.4.380.7378) onto a DSL-AC68U with the latest proper firmware installed via the built in Broadcom mini CFE web server which is accessible via recovery mode.

It doesn't seem to care about file size mismatches and the like, unlike the ASUS recovery tool. After about 8 minutes the flash was successfully executed, the router rebooted, i telneted into it and erased the nvram via "mtd-erase2 nvram".
I logged into the web interface and checked, worked like a charm. The device still identifies as "DSL-AC68U", though DSL configuration tabs were gone.
Using the Firmware Upgrade Tab from Administration i then proceeded to flash the newest Merlin Release 380.65_4. Again, no problems or hiccups. The "downgrade" must have worked.
I am currently using it to power my SOHO and everything seems to work like it should, no issues so far.

Would you be able to post instructions on how the install was done on the dsl ac68u?

Thanks in advance.

This blog post i stumbled upon contains the procedure in great detail: https://tedstechshack.com/2015/10/2...edtomato-firmware-on-an-asus-rt-ac68u-router/.
The author had similar issues flashing within the router GUI and pointed me to the broadcom cfe solution.

First i upgraded to the latest official DSL-AC68U firmware on the stock UI, since mine was severely outdated and in the old format (<v380).
I proceeded to use above instructions to flash the lastest RT-AC68U firmware via the broadcom web server (takes about 10 min after clicking the button, do not interrupt oder do anything ... it will eventually give feedback.). It is assumed you have activated shell/telnet access to the router beforehand, if not, do it before updating anything.

After that you can simply use the stock firmware update feature in ASUS-WRT. The router will still be labeled as DSL-Version but for all intents and purposes work as an RT Version; e.g. the firmware flash to the lastest Merlin will not fail and DSL options/tabs will have disappeared.

I have followed the instructions and it all seems to have worked however it is labelled as the rt-ac68u. I will test further and see how it goes

scrap that, as soon as I updated to merlin it changed it back to dsl-ac68u. Thanks Roundhauser....

Hth, got mine cheap from a warehouse deal for about 82€, practically new. Often there are more of these available for lower prices than the regular RT Versions, i wonder why...

Funnily enough same here. I managed to get one really cheap and so I thought it would be cool to experiment on.
