[RT-AC68U] [Asuswrt xx.38-1] Overclocking settings are lost after reboot

I have the same issue - but with a twist. One AC68U brand new but manufactured in 2013 overclocks just fine to 1000/800. Another AC68U manufactured in 2014 won't let me overclock the DRAM off the stock 666 or it goes into reboot loop mode. I can do 1200/666 on the new 2014 model. Same hardware revision on both units, same stock firmware shipped with the units as well. Both are running and shipped with the Bootloader version 1.0.1.6. Odd....

I bought mine at Costco 2 weeks ago for $159 USD. It said mfg year 2013 with check number 1676 (Here is on the router label: Asus RT-AC68R, H/W Version: A1, F/W Ver: 3.0.0.4.374_379). It cannot over-clocked beyond 1200/666 (Yes it came with bootloader 1.0.1.6), otherwise it goes into reboot loop mode like BigTim mentioned as well.

I have exactly the same issue. After set RAM freq at 800 and commit -> router continuously blinks blue diodes with repeatable scheme. I suppose that ASUS has changed sometihing inside bootloader even it's the same build.

Strange stuff. I just picked up a refurbished AC68R unit and it does not respond to any over clocking via telnet at all.

I tried 1000,800 and 1000,666 and it does not seem to change or keep it when rebooting. I got it to change the display in Merlin to 1000 but when you check via telnet it has not changed:

Nevermind, after reading the whole thread again and others on the net I guess I figured it out. Since I have boat loader 1.0.1.1 it seems I can only handle mem speed 533. 1.0.1.6 fixes that to 666 but blocks 800 etc.. So, since there are people with 1200,800 (or maybe just on the AC56U) is there a working BL in between? I got it now to 1000,533 and I guess if I wanted to go higher (mem) I would need to up the boot leader. How do I do that? It seems there is a separate patch for that? Is that recommended? What would I gain or lose? Looks like I should do that to get the 666 mem speed.

can CFE 1.0.1.7 clock pass 1200/800?

Hi, i am a newbie here.Reading through the threads and manage to get pass 1200/666 on my rt-ac68u running on merlin XX.46 with CFE 1.0.1.7
Would appreciate if anyone could share any thought if this CFE can get through 1200/800? I have fumbled once and have to do a factory reset..almost on the brink of throwing the unit away. ha. TQ in advance.

I would leave the memory at 666. Maybe you could get it to 1400,666 but I think that is a bit of a stretch. This unit seems to run hotter than the AC56U or the R7000, so clocking the cpu at 1400 might shorten the lifespan if it even boots. The memory might not have it in it to run at 800. You have a solid gain already from the CPU factory 800 Mhz. What does the CPU temp say at 1200 mhz? close to 80 degrees celsius? Leave it and enjoy, don't kill it… ;-)

I have my AC68R running at 1200,800 without problems (it does make a difference for throughput running a VPN client). But, at that speed it did run pretty hot....85C+. I added a cooling fan on the back and now at 65C.

thanks to john again for his help, my ac68 is now at 1200,800 and cooled by a fan also, temps in low 50s in middle of june.

I have ac68u whith stock modified CFE 1.0.2.0 EU changed region restriciton runing HGG firmware which can change nvram settings.
If i set 1200 666 throw nvram it works perfect if i change memory to 800 it bootloop , wanna ask a q it is CFE restricion and i need to flash latest cfe whith unloked 800 memory , or it related to mine router and it cant run 800 memory ?

Was discussed in the past several times: Some devices have different RAMs which do not allow overclocking the RAM above the standard 666 MHz!
Just change the CPU clock and you are fine - the RAM change is not that significant as the CPU is!

I had also such a AC68U model until it was bricked during a firmware update (most likely related to overclocking)!
Now my main router is a AC87U, which again does not allow to overclock the RAM (it runs fixed with 800 MHz).

I've overclocked my AC68U to 1000,666 for now using John's fork and all seems good with a nice performance boost. Just wondering what brand or size of USB fan I should use on the back of the router based upon experiences. Thanks very much.

Just get yourself some cheap ones from China (5/6 USD). Since running 24/7 limits the lifespan, you might want to stock a couple.

means its running at equivalent to 800MHz, so the answer to your question is "yes the overclocked failed".

Any recommendations on a valid method to overclock a RT-AC68U? I realize that this thread is quite old and some options may like the turbo with WPS button may not be valid anymore.
