RT-AC68U Double NAT

keyboard99

Occasional Visitor
I have the SKY SR102 Modem Router and the Asus RT-AC68U. My set up is the Sky box has wireless disabled, I have a DMZ set up on the Sky box with the IP address of the WAN port on the Asus. DHCP is disabled on the sky box. My Asus is running in Wireless mode. I want to run a VPN into my box.
Behind the asus are my PC’s, phones, NAS.

I am having issues connecting to the network externally. When I use the AIcloud software from my 4G phone it connects OK (so this is getting out of the NAT).

The DDNS page has this warning
"The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address.

This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment and DDNS service cannot work in this environment."

I want to be able to set up something on my laptop to view my files on my server/NAS when I am outside of the network. I’ve tried setting up OpenVPN but the router says my IP is internal so won’t work.

Not sure if I am trying to solve the unsolvable here.
Any help to resolve this would be great, let me know if I need to provide screenshots or any more information.
RT-AC-68U Settings
IP Address 192.168.0.254 (IP assigned by SKY box in the DMZ)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 (IP of the SKY box)

WAN DNS Setting
DNS Server1 90.207.238.97 (these are sky DNS)
DNS Server2 90.207.238.97

Thanks

I got rid of my sky SR102 cause it was a pain in the backside to do things like this.

Just ended up plugging lan cable from the btopenreach modem into the WAN port of my AC87u (assuming you're on Sky fiber)

Of course to do that you would have to flash your AC86u to merlins firmware and extract you're username/password from the sky router to set up the internet connection on the Asus.

I know using something other than sky's equipment is against their t&c's (which we all know is ridiculous) but getting rid of it was the best thing I ever did, no problems with double NAT, openvpn works, have also got a DDNS service setup with a client on my PC to update when the WAN IP changes due to sky using dynamic IP's.

This is just my experience and what has worked for me, someone else may have a really simple solution to you're problem.

I have flashed mine with merlin. I am on sky fibre but it's fibre to the cabinet rather than the house. I read up on wireshank etc a while ago. Which open reach modem did you use?

I did have the ECI open reach modem on my Connection, but I purchased an unlocked Huawei HG612 purely so I could see my dsl line stats.

You would be on the right track in regards to wireshark into you're sky router, I know there are plenty of guides out there, I think I watched a guide on YouTube.

But all you need is username/password and the MAC address of your sky router to input into the Asus and you should be good to go.
It took a couple of hours for my internet connection to kick back in, I assumed it was something to do with using a new device on the sky network, maybe it had to register.

I also use googles dns servers in the wan settings as a posed to sky's, as I read they are better.

Cheers I will look at that Huawei modem them. So I take it that allows you to have an external ip on the wan port of the Asus

You should be able to take the cable out of the wan port on the sky router which comes from the btopenreach box, and plug straight into wan port on your asus. And then just configure the wan settings in the asus with the mac and username/password which you need to get out of the sky router via wireshark.

I purely got the Huawei to look at my DSL line stats, as you could see them in the sky router before (which is now in the bin) and they don't show up in the asus either.
