RT-AC68U - too much unstable mediaserver

I also have massive problems with the media server functionality of the ASUS RT-AC68U.
When switching the RT-AC68U on the media server does not start up reliably (only in 1 out of 3 cases).
So I typically have to switch on my PC, connect to the router, switch the media server off and on and then it works.
Of course this "workaround" isn't acceptable.

The ASUS support doesn't help me and gave me the answer "this can't be a SW problem, cause in some cases it does work" ?!?!?

Does anybody have the same problem and has already found a solution?

minidlna can easily crash if you have it process a media file that is corrupted. Corrupted files can sometime cause an excessive amount of memory to be used as it crashes. Sometimes it can recover and move to the next file, sometimes it will completely crash.

Try isolating your scanned media to pinpoint a possible file causing a scanning crash, have it scan only smaller portions of your collection at a time.

thank you for your immediate answer.
I'm completly aware that currupt files can make the job crash.
But in my case this cannot be the reason:
1) in about 30% of cases the job autostarts correctly and works fine.
2) after starting th job manually via the router page it works correctly and finds all files.
So it seems that the launch of the media server somehow gets in conflict with other jobs which are starting up after switching the router on.
Does anybody have a suggestion how to configure the router to stabilise the media server startup?

BTW: I updated today to 3.0.0.4.376_3626 but this new firmware didn't solve the problem.

New member, but a RT-AC66 user for about a year. Sorry for digging up an 'older' thread right off the bat and for such a long winded FNG post, but I've been struggling with the AC66 mediaserver I just recently spun it up (currently running RMerlin 3.0.0.4_376.49_5 with a 320Gb WD Passport USB connected (Fat32)). The primary intent was a central repository to view/store mp4's (viewed via Samsung smart TV).

I stood the mediaserver service up without issue, but upon adding additional content I began to notice anomalies. Specifically with folders/directories. Long and short of it, some directories appeared on the TV while others either didn't show up at all, or if they did, appeared to have no content. Example: Create two movie directories (while connected to laptop; Mac), one named "PG" the other "PG-13". Associated shares (manual) were then created for each. Each directory was populated with appropriate mp4 content (ranging from 10Gb to 22Gb). Using two different Samsung smart TVs, many times one directory would be revealed, while the other is either non-existent or exists, but has no discoverable content. Thinking this might be a naming convention limitation, I removed the "-" from folder name. No go. Removed numbers, reduced content in each folder, renamed folders, etc. Nothing.

Last evening I re-formatted (zeroing the drive), created folder "PG-13" and "R". Smart TV discovered everything flawlessly. Issuing the "sync && sync && sync &&" before ejecting and disconnecting the drive, I then created a third directory, "PG-13_2", and populated it with content. Plugged it back into the AC66, gave it a few minutes, and added the share (manually). Using the TV again, the "PG-13", "R", and new "PG-13_2 showed up. Unfortunately only "PG-13" & "R" had discoverable content. "PG-13_2" shows not content. Thinking maybe the mediaserver could handle of two directories (for whatever reason), I removed the "R" share. Now only the "PG-13" share was visible.

At that point, I began to wonder if manually creating shares with the problem. So, I deleted all manually created shares, and selected the radio button for "All shares..." (default). Doing that revealed only the "PG-13_2", but not its contents; "PG-13" and "R" were absent. When I did attempt to discover the contents of the "PG-13_2" folder an 'access restriction' type error message was generated.

I can't seem to correlate any rhyme or reason as to why some directories show up, but others don't. Or why some folders show up with discoverable content and other folder are present but whose content is not discoverable??

Any input, feedback, or insight would be greatly appreciated.

That's a known issue. I did more things than you.

Finally I found this solution by myself.
Current solution: rescan your HDD everytime manually after you upload files...this is the only way with asus official firmware.
Go to admin panel>USB>Utility>Rescan.
This process does unmount HDD and remount it, then update file list for minidlna.
Or use Merlin's firmware, Merlin fixed that issue.

Just to let everyone know, it appears the random directory/contents appearance/disappearance problem seems to be related to one particular file. After eliminating that file from from 51 others on the drive, all directories/contents appear as expected. Not exactly sure why miniDLNA is choking on that file as its an average mp4 like all the others and plays fine on other media.

Thanks.

I also have the same issues with the Media Server on this router and I believe that recent firmware changes made it worse... I used the Administration -> Feedback page to send Asus my experience and ask for a solution. Here is the message that I sent:

"Media Server becomes inaccessible over the night!!! Reapplying the Media Server settings makes it work but for a while and only after Media Server is scanning again the disk. This seems to be systematic. The RT-AC68U was configured to scan the disk each night so this might be a clue; I changed this setting to do it monthly so I can see if this has any consequence. Before I upgraded the router's firmware (last year) I rarely had issues with the same disk (MyBook 4T) connected to the USB 3 port but now I had visibility issues. The disk is fine, nothing wrong with it... I suspect that the issue is a recent RT-AC68U firmware problem related to the disk sleep/periodic scan/USB discovery. "
Anybody wants to explore/confirm this supposition? Thanks!
