I am using a RT-AC87U AC2400 router and overall I am quite happy with it. I have no issues with the direct connection. My problem lays within the Wifi connection.
I have every now and then a timeout. Now and then means, when sending around 1000 ping requests, I receive on average 2-3 timeouts - while doing the same with direct connection 0 timeouts. This leads to issues when downloading (connection lost) and streaming (quality buffers).
Mostly, I use standard settings in terms of band etc. The router is on the most current firmware and freshly reset. However, the issue still persists.
Did anybody encounter a similar problem and has an idea how to solve it?

I have now tried to switch it to 5ghz as well as specific channels. This seems to help.
