Hello everyone,

This forum has been a wealth of knowledge so thank you. I just upgraded to a RT-AX86U yesterday and am loving it so far but I'm having a speed issue and I haven't been able to find any similar posts.

I'm not able to get more then ~300Mbps over WiFi on download but my upload is in the 800s.

I have gig internet and hard wire is perfect 950/950. I've tried playing around with settings, have the channels hard coded but I can't get above around 300 using 5Ghz. I am using Smart Connect.

I'm seeing folks that are getting in the 700's so it sounds possible. I'm testing with a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra next to the router.

Any thoughts or suggestions to try or is 300 the expected real world speed? I'm not in a congested area or apartment.

Thank you very much!

Hello everyone,

This forum has been a wealth of knowledge so thank you. I just upgraded to a RT-AX86U yesterday and am loving it so far but I'm having a speed issue and I haven't been able to find any similar posts.

Don't use Smart Connect. Disable it.

Don't do your 5Ghz speed tests right next to the router. You might want to even try being at least one room away when you run your tests. While it might seem logical that the closer you are there would be less interference and better throughput when you are closer doing your speed tests that isn't necessarily true. Modern router Wifi technology ( i.e. see OFDMA and MIMO) actually takes advantage of the reflections in your environment (especially in the 5Ghz frequency band) that cause slight delays in the signal to help differentiate and segment the signal into digital data segments to improve throughput.

Any thoughts or suggestions to try or is 300 the expected real world speed? I'm not in a congested area or apartment.

Thank you very much!

There could be an incompatibility with the phone's current Wifi 6 feature set and Asus router settings that are not allowing the throughput to be optimized. Try adjusting more of the Asus router settings. To start use separate SSIDs for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Turn off WPA3 and use WPA2 instead.

Forum member L&LD posted a number of recommended settings here that are helpful at avoiding problems and optimizing the reliability of your Asus Wifi 6 router.

Try with another device like laptop or different phone to make sure that the "problem" is not "the receiver"
Yes, good suggestion. It's always a good idea to test your Wifi with different Wifi devices to help determine the source of a possible performance issue.

So as an update, I'm using the Speed Test Android app on a Galaxy S21 Ultra. A few times the other day I was able to get the download speed in the 500's but it's typically been capping out at 280. I went to speedtest.net from Samsung internet browser on the phone and I get consistent 450mb + download speeds so I'm not sure if there's an issue with the app itself or what's going on. Hard wired speeds are excellent 950 / 950 and 300 down over WiFi isn't something I'm going to fret about but I've heard folks getting 600 + on their routers

600+Mbps over Wifi with the AX86U is possible so you don't have to give up on getting higher numbers. I didn't see any feedback related to my posts but I provided links above with suggested wireless settings for you to try with your Asus router.

You don't have to obsess about it but when you have the time you could experiment as previously suggested with different devices and drivers. It can depend on the types of wireless devices you are using, the drivers those devices are using, how many antennas those devices have, the channels being used (on 5Ghz) and many other factors. You could continue to post your findings and ask for more suggestions from other users here as needed.
