RT-AX86U Pro 3006_102.4 "Firmware upgrade unsuccessful"

Yeah true. Not sure why it happened. If asus ever end up cutting support to the ax6000 I would then re try the merlin firmware because i do believe security patches are important in the world of hackings and viruses. Maybe asus devices aren't made very good or all internet box's aren't lol. Every internet box I've had that wasn't asus was allways so bad. My ax6000 once setup is awesome though. I'm enjoying it right now . Really good coverage over my whole property and 1gb speeds. I'm happy right now lol. Enjoy your day mate.

If ASUS stops delivering updates for the AX6000, Asuswrt-Merlin users (like me) are also out of luck. Because much of the stock firmware is closed source, Merlin (or the community) can’t provide updates (for those parts) either, once ASUS stops.

PS: Happy Asuswrt-Merlin user here (on the GT-AX6000); I only used stock to install Asuswrt-Merlin…

I appreciate that, thank you. Based on the other thread that I linked where someone else had the exact same error that I did, I was concerned that my router was defective and needed to be sent back under warranty. I just wanted to diagnose my router to see if it also had "bad blocks on the NAND chip." Just because someone isn't as advanced as you, doesn't mean they are incapable of following instructions and being cautious. Plenty of people use Merlin firmware who aren't Mensa members.

Anyway, I did a hard reset of my router today using the WPS method. This time I disconnected my security system and a second Ethernet cable, so that the only Ethernet connected was going to my desktop. After I went through the initial process again, I was told that new firmware was available and chose to upgrade. The upgrade process was stuck and no further updates were given, even though it said it should take under 3 minutes. I opened another tab and logged into the router and was surprised to see that Merlin was still installed. I was under the impression that a hard reset would be a factory reset, so I'm a bit confused.

After doing another hard reset, I chose not to upgrade the firmware. Merlin was still installed. Before I went through the hassle of using the firmware restoration tool, I decided to try the manual update of the latest Merlin firmware again. It worked perfectly! I don't know what the problem was before. Maybe it was my security system or the fact that I was using a laptop?
Not sure I understand what you did, because Merlin FW is only a manual update option... You can just be notified of a new version but nothing else.
ASUS FW can be updated from within the router gui (even automatically) without downloading it and manually uploading to the router.

But anyway, glad it finally worked for you!

I'm a member of Densa and have no problems using Merlin for over 12 years you have to download the firmware unzip it and launch the file does not do auto updates

@MDM Just to be an advocate to how I read it.
To me it sounds like he was following the manual update process every time; by the use of the following wording:
even though it said it should take under 3 minutes. I opened another tab

Which would match wording to wait 3 minutes for the manual update process, and the fact that he opened "another" tab:

He also quickly mentioned trying the manual upgrade "again" implying that is what he did the first time.
I decided to try the manual update of the latest Merlin firmware again. It worked perfectly! I don't know what the problem was before.

The confusing wording might of been that he "chose to upgrade" but that doesn't imply anything automated. Likely a short-hand for downloading the firmware and uploading it as we all expect.

Now just to be an advocate to me and Martinski's project, Merlin firmware can be auto-updated without user intervention but only if installing MerlinAU after setting it up using "amtm" in ssh :)
Not by default like ASUS firmware, I'm sure that's what you meant ;)

Yep, the wording in the part "After I went through the initial process again, I was told that new firmware was available and chose to upgrade." is the one that throw a wrench to me, sounding like he upgraded official and nor merlin FW... 😁

That's right, I meant without a script, normally it does not offer such an option. ;)
