RT-N66U and WOL

It is probably a known issue that WOL over internet does not always work reliably with the RT-N66U (standard FW 3.0.0.4.374_5517). Haven't updated to the latest FW yet because I did not see any fixes in the release notes that concerned me.

My UDP port 9 forward has been set up to a specific IP address, not a broadcast. The PC in question only wakes up on a magic packet containing the specific MAC address, so I don't think I need to be concerned with Internet based port scanners waking up the PC.

Sometimes it works when I send a WOL packet, sometimes it does not. I suspect the ARP table needs a static entry for the specific IP address and MAC address combination.

Do I need Merlin firmware for this, like described in this post? Or can I accomplish this with the standard firmware?

Thanks!

Can't speak to other firmwares, but it works great in TomatoUSB/Shibby on my RT-N66U (http://tomato.groov.pl using v117). I schedule the command ether-wake [MAC address]...very dependable. Works fine from the command line as well. I do not know that all motherboards respond dependably to WOL magic packets but be sure that your WOL setting in BIOS is set for STR3 on the target machine. My target machines have Award and Intel BIOSes.

I have version 3.0.0.4.376_1071. I am able to Wake on LAN reliably any capable device remotely with the RT-N66U. I do so by using the Asus mobile Apps (AiCloud on iTunes or Android market) or by remotely login to the ASUS RT-N66U after setting an OpenVPN tunnel. I also done the same with previous firmware version, it is not a new capabilities.
