RT-N66U problems, I'm lost

I am new to this forum and just installed a new RT-N66U router yesterday that I purchased at Christmas time. I also changed to Comcast Performance using a Arris TC862 modem. I HAD A Linksys with my DSL and had no problems.
I let the cd setup my router and it also updated the firmware. My iphones and ipad are very erratic I switch back and forth between 2.4 and 5g and sometimes they work and sometimes not. I t gets my mail sometimes and not at others. Facebook loads but not the pictures. My wires devices are also erratic, I've tried IE7 Firefox, Chrome and Safari They work sometimes and not others, and also seems slow. I'm plugged directly into the modem at this time in order to type this, which works fine. Should the firewall in the router be turned on. I'm at a loss at what to do. I was trying to set up port forwarding for my Foscam camera and no luck there either. I usad to think I knew a little about computers, but now I think I know nothing.
Thanks for any help, John

Yes, firewall should be on. I am not sure what causes your problems.

1) If you plug in one computer directly into your modem - do you still have problems?

2) If you switch back to Linksys router - do you still have problems?

There is always a chance your RT-N66U is defective too.

I am plugged in direct to modem now and it all seems good. I haven't tried Linksys yet. I will have to wait until my wife finishes working.
Thanks, john

It looks like I should have posted in the RT-n66U forum. Sorry, I don't know if someone can move this or if I should post it again.

I too have issues with the 5Ghz. Sometimes our iPads, iPhones and laptops have an issue connecting, but yet the 2.4Ghz seems to work flawlessly. Yesterday. I had to power the router down twice because my laptop refused to connect. On the apple devices hitting Renew Lease sometimes corrects the issue.

I just tried my second RT-n66u router and I am having the same issues. I have changed the cables. I have tried 3 different firmware versions, I had comcast put my Arris TG862 modem in Bridge mode. I am up and running with an old Linksys wrt54g
On the Asus both of them had the same problem where the wired and wireless where connected at times but not connected most of the time. The same problem with both 2.4 and 5 ghz.
When I picked up the new router I noticed 8 returned ones on the shelf. I would appreciate any help in getting this going
Thanks John

Hi,
as far I can understand all you problem are on the WIFI, if so please update your firmware to the latest one it my be fix all of this issue, also check on the web interface to see if the wifi setting are set correctly for your region.
:)

Is this the Asus f/w you are referrng too ? Try Merlins f/w to see if it solves your problem. I myself updated my N66U to TomatoUSB Shibby and have had no problems since the update.
Update : Have you tried factory reset and clearing the nvram ? Could be the solution for your problems.

I am also having a problem with my 2 desktops that hooked up with a cat 6 cables. I have tried the latest firmware, even the beta.

Hi,
Take some time, start with one client at a time to see it works OK, then add next one and see if alright, then add next and so on to find out what's going on. Trouble-shooting a
problem needs logical thinking and patience.

please describe the exact configuration of both the n66u and TG862 gateway, including IP addresses.
If it were me I would return the gateway and just get a standard telephony modem.

Is the gateway setup as a DHCP server or bridge? If your router and gateway are both DHCP, it will cause lots of problems.

Recommend setting gateway to bridge to router and let the router serve up DHCP.

Thanks everyone. I talked to Asus and Comcast and both agreed that the Arris tg862 was not the modem to use with my router. Asus said not to put the modem into bridge mode but to turn the wireless radio off. Comcast said that can't be done, that the only way to turn radio off is bridge mode. So I bought an Arris tg722 which is only a modem for telephone an internet and not a router. Now everything works just fine. :)
Thanks again everyone, John
