RT-N66U Setup your own cloud

Fighter

New Around Here
Since a while I’m trying to setup my “own” cloud storage using Asus RT-N66U router, but till now I have no Idea how to do this. If somebody could help that would be really great.

So I have:
RT-N66U (Asuswrt-Merlin firmware)
Ext HDD connected to it.

What I need to do:
Automated synchronization between my laptop folders and this ext HDD connected to the router.

So Ideally it should work like standard cloud storage, e.g. Dropbox.

I’ve already tried to use AiCloud, but it synchronizes HDD with the real cloud storage, which means for me that I need to have quite a large amount of space available in the cloud storage. So I would like to eliminate this “intermediate” step and synronize directly laptop and HDD without Asus cloud.

If anybody can give me a hint on how to setup the service I need it would be really appreciated.

The most secure way is to setup an OpenVPN server on your router. Then install an OpenVPN client on your laptop. You will be able to see the ext HDD as a network share when your laptop is somewhere outside of your home. Then you may use any synchronization software. This way is the MOST SECURE but slowest as the strong encryption of the OpenVPN tunnel slows down the connection. On my RT-N66U I reach about 14 Mbps with 256 bit AES encryption. If you use 128 bit encryption you may reach about 22-25 Mbps.

Do you have any suggestions for software? I have used Bvckup 2 (http://www.bvckup2.com/) in the past and found it very good.

I'm not an expert in synchronization software as I don't use such one. I synchronize my "cloud folder" not very often and have not too much changes so I do it manually. :)
