RT-N66U - slow wifi

Hi guys,

I have an Asus N66u with firmware 3.0.0.4.378_6117

I seem to have poor wifi speed and stability (i live in a 2 storey 1400sqft townhome)

wired i get about 110Mbps but on wireless i barely get past 30Mbps

i've played around with different wifi channel settings - was able to get 50-60Mbps on 1 channel (channel 6) but it was super unstable and would always drop out

i get the same results on wifi despite being in the same room or downstairs in the living room
same results on both 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz

been playing with the idea of upgrading to the Asus AC68U - but wanted to see if flashing custom firmware would yield some better results before I put more money out on a new router

edit: i have tried doing a hard reset before - same results, devices that are connected wirelessly are 3 laptops that are used for gaming/streaming, 3 phones (samsung s6, iphone 6, oneplusone)

Recommend you try the john9527 or the hggomes forks of RMerlin's firmware before buying more equipment.

And make sure you take the time to test for best channel too. Actual throughput, not just indicated connection rate or signal strength as indicated by a utility such as inssider, for example.

Also, test with a laptop (preferably powered by AC) instead of a low powered handheld device like a phone or tablet.

where can i find the john9527 firmware?

have not heard of the hggomes forks of RMerlin's firmware - but was told the RMerlin's firmware are pretty good too

ive found threads but none of which seem to be updated

For hggomes firmware, you will need to PM him for the download links.

RMerlin's firmware is a (huge) step above stock Asus firmware too, but his builds do not concentrate on giving more performance, rather they concentrate on stability and bug fixes instead.

just installed hggomes firmware

damn it already improved a lot !

with my laptop 2feet away from the router i am able to get 80-96Mbps on wifi !!
however this is only on 2.4ghz

on 5.0ghz i dont get anywhere near (40-60Mbps)

i noticed there are a lot of unlocked channels now for the wifi - i know for 2.4ghz 12,13,14 do not work in Canada/USA (so i've been told) what about 5.0ghz?

any other settings recommended I should play around with?

thinking about playing with the output from 50% to 75% but not sure if i should..

Hi,

There is no magic possible (like firmware tweaking) about WIFI spreading: It's all about physics!
Depending on the materials of the walls, ceiling, carpet, parquet flooring, etc., it can spread more or less across your home!
On top you need to respect the regulatory/legal boundaries which do not allow to modify the transmission power or channels!

The simple and perfect solution is to place (multiple) WLAN access points in your home and to connect them via cable (or power line) with the router - see my footer!
