[RT-N66U] Upgrading to Asuswrt-Merlin from OEM firmware

If I upgrade from (current) OEM firmware to the Merlin firmware, will I be able to restore settings that I've saved or is it a complete restart from scratch? If the latter, are there any suggestions on how to make the process less painful?
