RT-N66U USB HD keeps unmounting

New Around Here
My router is able to connect fine to my NTFS 600 GB harddrive (nonpowered). Only problem is that once I start streaming movies from it, a few minutes later it unmounts itself. I have defragmented and ran chkdsk on the hd already with no solution. Anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Here is a link to the log file: http://pastebin.com/P9NzNUm9

Code:
end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 74049912

Is the drive new? I think you would be better off formatting the drive to EXT3 instead of NTFS.

Also, what firmware version are you on, have you updated latley?

Do you have the setting USB Application > Miscellaneous Setting >NTFS Sparse Files support ? Is it enabled?

The drive is old. I might try formating it to EXT3 if all fails. I am on firmware 3.0.0.4.374_720. NTFS Sparse files is disabled. Should it be enabled?

Those I/O errors suggest to me the drive has bad sectors. NTFS Sparse files should be enabled if you are using NTFS though I doubt it will help with your issue. I would still try EXT3 and see what happens. Format it from a linux environment if possible, gparted can be put on a usb flash drive and booted from to format your disks properly.

I tried formating to EXT3 and the same problem occurred. I am not sure if it is because of bad sectors or not. I reformatted it back to NTFS and it plays fine on my computer when I stream it with a direct usb connection. Is it possible that there is not enough energy input from the router to power the hard drive while it is streaming?

Non-powered USB disks have never been very reliable. I've seen some of these fail to work reliably even on some computers for instance - adding an external power supply (when they have a plug for it) resolved the issues. My advice is to stick with something that comes with its own power source.

You could also try to put a powered USB hub between the router and the disk - it might help.
