RT-N66U USB HD unmounts itself when streaming movies

mirwin

New Around Here
Does anyone have any ideas how to stop a 2TB My Passport USB HD formatted with NTFS randomly unmounting itself from my RT-N66U while streaming movies (4Gb) to my HTPC running XMBC on Windows 8 via 20 meters of Cat 6? I annoyingly have to reboot the N66U a few times per movie.

Could this have anything to do with my 2TB My Passport USB HD always appearing in Windows Explorer as a Media device, but only sometimes appearing as a Network Device, under my other home Network PC’s?

I'm running 3.0.0.4.270 firmware.

Thanks

Hi,

Do you have any log entries in the System Log when the problem appears?

As 2TB (and more) drives mad some problems in the past: Why do you not check the latest Merlin firmware to see if it fixes your issue?

With kind regards
Joe

Thanks Joe, I installed Merlin's firmware and rebooted RT-N66U and all home PC's, but my USB HD still umnounts itself when streaming movies.

Logs below show what happened, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

FYI, SILVERDALEROUTA is the name of the offending USB HD

Try a different USB cable, see if it helps.

USB disk support is a bit quirky with the router. Quite a few disks will have issues and randomly drop. Not much that can be done I'm afraid.

Thanks RMerlin for the advice, I changed the USB cable, but after 6 minutes of streaming a movie the USB HD Unmounted itself from my RT-N66U requiring me to reboot it.

Can anyone make any sense of the logs below (at 00:11:05 it looks like the USB Port was disabled by the RT-N66U), or am I better off changing my Router, USB HD or getting a NAS? None of which I want to do

All the logs are telling us is what we already knew: the router has troubles talking with the USB disk, so it eventually gets disconnected.

Try formatting to ext3 after saving your data to another disk.

Try formatting to ext3 after saving your data to another disk
Hi,

I was thinking in the same direction, but a more step by step approach.
a) Assuming that the disk is NTFS (Windows) formated:
- Run a check disk on the Windows PC to see if the disk content is OK
- Do some video playing/streaming on the Windows PC to see how the disk behaves

b) Only if you figure out a problem under the above checks
- Save your data to another disk and format the disk (under Windows and "not quick format") to stress it and to read all the sectors
- Put back the data a and retry the Router streaming
- If it still does not work, I would then give it a try for EXT3 formatting...

With kind regards
Joe

Had the same issue, disconnecting, IO errors, especially after adding a 3TB disk to a 4bay enclosure.

Tried Ext4 and NTFS both same issues on AC56U.

Tested surface for bad clusters for 6 hours, none.

Then after a research found out there was a "feature" (self spindown) on the enclosure as:
http://forum.mediasonic.ca/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1477

and had to change the firmware for it. (Not an upgrade)

Testing now, for the start seems OK, wanted to share for some having similar headaches.
