Security aspects of buying a second-hand router

fb_jim

New Around Here
I'm planning to buy a new router from second hand sales, most likely Asus TUF-AX4200 or RT-AX53U since there seems to be multiple units of both for sale.

What do you think in general about the security of buying a router from second hand market?

Of course one should reset the router first, and I'm going to reinstall the firmware too (most likely it will be OpenWRT), so any infection there should be cleared.

But there is still the bootloader. It's u-boot in both of these routers.

Well, I think it's highly unlikely that the bootloader was infected, or tampered with. But as far as I understand it's not generally protected by "secure boot" scheme of any kind, in these routers?

For some routers like the RT-N series with CFE based bootloader, I think you could flash the bootloader too? How about these u-boot routers?

Just don't buy this one and you're good... ;)
