Set up VPN on downstream router

Good morning. I live in a rural area and my only internet is via a MOFI 4500 Cellular Router. This router from my understanding runs Open-WRT. I've also got an ASUS RT-N66R that runs Asus' version of DD-WRT. I want to install a VPN on the ASUS router, but it won't allow me to do that in AP mode like I have it set up now. I tried running it in regular router mode, but it won't connect to the internet when I do that. The ASUS is plugged into the MOFI via Ethernet. Does anyone know how I can get this to work? If I could get the VPN to run on the MOFI, that would be ideal. I'm scared to flash the MOFI to DD-WRT though and brick the unit. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

To get the router to allow traffic through on DD-WRT its mode needs to be "Gateway" mode. Also you need to out it on another subnet.
