How can I set up a VPN on my Wi-Fi router so all connected devices use it?

New Around Here
Hi everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to implement a VPN directly on my Wi-Fi router. My goal is that all devices connected to the router (phones, laptops, smart TVs, etc.) automatically go through the VPN, without needing to install VPN apps individually.

I’d like to know:

What kind of router hardware do I need (can I use a normal consumer router, or do I need something more advanced)?

What software/firmware options are available (e.g., DD-WRT, OpenWrt, router models with built-in VPN support)?

Are there any limitations I should be aware of (like speed loss, compatibility issues, or number of devices)?

Any recommendations, guides, or example setups would be super helpful. Thanks!

Most ASUS routers will run OpenVPN clients and some of the newer ASUS routers will also run WG clients which will maximize your throughput. Stock firmware will allow you to route all connected devices through VPN by simply selecting that option. Merlin firmware will give you more granular control on a device by device basis.

DISADVANTAGES RUNNING VPN:

1. Your download speeds will be reduced. With even the most powerful ASUS router such as the AX88 Pro your download speed will top out at about 600 Mbps. Less powerful routers running OpenVPN clients will probably be processor limited to 150 Mbps.

2. Certain web sites and services will not let you connect using a VPN (Netflix, Amazon Prime, banks, etc. among others).

3. You will be paying money for a service that at best only marginally increases your security. Don't believe all the marketing hype.
