What router do you have? Many have a USB attachment on them. My first baby NAS was an old hard drive put into an enclosure and attached it to my Asus RT-AC86U. The router itself made it available over SMB to windows devices. Doesn't get that much simpler than that, but it did use memory on the router for managing it so it's easy to go "too big".I've have had a Buffalo Linkstation Mini with 2 x 2.5" drives, but died of old age.
Is there something similar in size or smaller with 2 x 2.5 or 2 x M2 ?
Eventually just one drive if an USB for backup is available. Ethernet only, no wifi, no vent!

I can buy that it's not recommended bc there are better ways to do this, but this is literally the definition of a NAS (Network Attached Storage). This is not a NAS. Not recommended.

I reviewed the Beelink ME mini - and while it won’t serve as the dual-purpose mini PC it wants to be, it's a great alternative solid-state server
A cheap SSD NAS for those with patiencewww.techradar.com
it's literally Network Attached Storage
It's a check box feature like other somewhat working Asuswrt features in YMMV category.
