SmartRG SR808ac DNS Settings

jRiffRaff

New Around Here
Hi,

I just bought a Broadcom (BCM93384) based SmartRG SR808ac gateway. I am trying to figure out how to change the domain name servers, as they seem to be inaccessible from the regular web/http interface.

I know I can telnet into the device and view various settings, and I assume that is how I would change the settings outside of the http interface, but I don't know how.

When I do telnet in, I cd to the 'eRouter' directory & using "show lease" I get the following for the IPv4 section:

IPv4 configuration
------------------
DHCP Settings:

Client Id = htype=255, value= xxxxxxxxx
State = Bound (5)
Static Lease = 0
AutoConfig Mode = IP, Subnet and Router
XID = xxxxxxxxxxx
Number of Tries = 0
Max Discover Tries = 6
Max Request Tries = 5
DHCP server MAC addr = xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ignore NAKs = 0
TWC NAK Wait For Lease Expiry = 0
My offered IP address = xxx.0.xxx.xxx (primary IP address)
(1) Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.224
(3) Router IP address = xxx.0.xxx.xxx
(54) DHCP Server IP address = xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(82) Relay Agent IP address = xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
TFTP Server IP address = 0.0.0.0
CM Configuration file = ''
(2) UTC Time Offset = 0 seconds
(4) Time Server IP address =
(6) Domain Name Server = xxx.xxx.xxx.xx; xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(7) Log Server IP address =
(51) Lease time = 172800 seconds
(58) T1 (renew) = 86400 seconds
(59) T2 (rebind) = 151200 seconds
Lease is infinite = 0

I'm wondering if the numbers in parentheses indicate some index I need to refer to, but I can't figure out how to change the settings.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,
jRR

The numbers in parentheses are just the DHCP option numbers, so not particularly relevant to your problem.

I see that this question has been asked before on the web without any response. So it appears that there is no way to change it.

The only options I can see are;

1) Change the SmartRG's WAN connection type from DHCP to static. That would allow you to manually enter all the information but I expect you'd probably loose internet connectivity once your old DHCP lease expired.:(

2) Set the DNS server manually on every client.:(

3) Turn off the SmartRG's DHCP server and setup your own somewhere on your LAN, using something like a Raspberry Pi.

So, since there are already DNS addresses- how did they get there? Does the ISP flash them to the device? Wouldn't there be a soft way to get those in place normally?

As you mentioned, I can't switch to static IP since that would constantly expire, I have some devices that don't have there own DNS settings, and I'm not skilled enough to figure out how to set up my own DHCP server...

Sigh...

The DNS addresses are acquired by DHCP from your ISP's server (along with the other information shown).

Okay. I'm not used to not having a router which I couldn't change the DNS, so I didn't realize that DHCP provided that as well, but that makes sense.

I'm still surprised that there is no access to change it through the Broadcom/SmartRG rg-console interface (telnet). Looks like I'll need to put it in bridge mode and use another router to get what I want.

Thanks for your help,
jRR
