New Around Here
I have a RT-N66U and wanted to upload a new firmware but I failed...
I uploaded it with the GUI and after the upload was successful (100%) I got the message to restart the router manually.
So I pushed the power button but the router got stuck....

Unfortunately I cannot even reset the router, what can I do now?

I tried to reset as follows:
1) RT powered on > press the reset button more than 10 sec, 20 sec, 30sec
2) RT powered off > press the reset button > RT powered on > waited 10 sec/20sec/30 sec and released the reset button
3) RT on > press resetbutton 30 sec> power off 30 sec > power on 30 sec > release reset button
4) use the IP detect sw from ASUS > no Device found
5) use the restoration SW > no device in restoration mode found

O f course I cannot reach the GUI via http://192.168.1.1/
(I get a message that the IP address or port number was changed)
I also tried to reach it after I set my NIC card to a static IP address:
192.168.1.12,
Subnet 255.255.255.0,
Default gateway192.168.1.1

At least I suceeded to use the LAN ports again:
Press WPS and Reset > power off and on > release both buttons after 5 sec

I hope anyone has an idea to get the device in restoration mode or another way to get the firmware on the device and run it

ok, maybe this helps sombody else:

I was not able to get teh router into revovery / restoration mode.
The power LED simply did not blink...

After 100 different trials I did the following:
  1. switch off router
  2. unconnect all LAN cables
  3. press and hold WPS button
  4. switch on router
    (power LED was blinking)
  5. DO NOT RELEASE WPS BUTON
  6. Press reset button
  7. release WPS button
(now the Power LED was and kept in blinking mode)
  8. connect my PC to Router Port 3; switched off WIFI but stayed in DNS mode
  9. Started the rescue ASUS SW....
and tata! the firmware was uploaded.
  10. I directly uploaded the MERLIN firmware

gbock, I wanted to thank you for posting your solution. I thought for sure I had bricked my trusty old RT-AC66U, but you helped me fix it! Thank you so much!

THANK YOU!

Welcome to the forum. And thanks for the feedback. I’m sure you’ll know that support for the RT-AC66U has ended

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/release-380-legacy-asuswrt-merlin-380-70-is-now-available.45934/

so unless you move to John’s fork - or are already using it - your router will become increasingly ‘out of date’ wrt security patches.

I am using Merlin's 380.70. Thank you so much for the information though and I appreciate the welcome. This is a great site just hadn't had a great reason to get a login, but I had to thank gbock because the traditional reset wasn't doing it. The router is back online by the way!

Super cool! I have not tried the fork. Merlin's firmware has been solid, but I will look at the fork! Really appreciate it! Thank you again very much!

On this specific router you have to be patiently because it takes at least an hour to upload firmware let it do its things you will be fine
