Signature version is nothing to do with the firmware, that is the database version from TrendMicro.

Thanks heaps everyone for the expert and kind replies (especially RMerlin himself!) - really appreciate it all considering the circumstances that left even me baffled beyond belief.

Hopefully this is a good guide for others in the situation of needing to truely wipe and reset things.
