Struggling with Router and Speeds

Xraptorx

New Around Here
I have a modem from my ISP and a subsription that gives me 250 Mbps down and 15 Mbps up.

When I connect my laptop directly to the modem and go to speedtest.net, I get these speeds. I connect my Linksys WRT 1900 ACS router to the modem and then the laptop to the router and immediately get a major slowdown. My speeds are now 0.25 Mbps down and 2.5 Mbps up. Both are cut significantly, but the download is cut much more.

I bought the Linksys WRT 1900 ACS because the processor, 512k Ram and signal strength were reportedly the best out there. The router should be able to handle 15-20 devices connected via switches and wifi signal. However, it is not.

When I do a factory reset and then connect, the router performs fine. When I configure the wifi name / pass, the OpenDNS settings and stuff, the router continues to perform but after a day it slows down. Turning off and turning on again does not resolve the issue.

Vlan is turned off as well as SPI Firewall protection. Does anyone have advice on what could be the issue? Is it the router, the firmware, a setting somewhere or what do you suggest?

Should I use the cable modem as the DNS router and just use my Linksys as an access point?

might be a memory leak. Try using hardware acceleration. Use only basic features (try using your ISP DNS for once - default). Try using default settings and see if it still happens.

Check temperature and PSU as well, sometimes these things could be an issue.

Your download speeds are 1000x less? Can you return/exchange the router? Do so now.

Do a factory reset once more and a manual and minimal configuration (to secure the router and connect to your ISP) and then add your customizations one at a time (with a few days in between) and see which custom setting or feature used breaks it.

First thoughts are perhaps a defective device - also perhaps check the ethernet cable between the modem and the router - the one they put in the box is CAT6, but it's a flat wire, and I don't suggest using it.

Even with the factory firmware, it should easily handle 25 clients without a problem, and should give you decent enough speed...

So I called Linksys and spent 1 hour with tech support. The lady followed her script and we turned off media priorotization. That helped immediately. She told me that the router will reserve a large portion of the bandwidth for the prioritized clients and services even if they are not currently being used. Sounds strange to me, but .....it worked. Immediately, I got to 168 Mbps from 0.25 Mbps after turning it off.

Secondly we then reflashed the firmware. That made no difference.

Thirdly she had me turn off auto MTU and manually set it to 1475. The router took a long time to process that change and then failed to connect to the modem again until I turned it off and then on again. Finally, after that change I got up to 190 Mbps. My sip provides me 250 Mbps at the modem.

The tech support told me since the modem is part of a network and has 10+ devices it is supporting ( 2 switches, iPhones, iPads, laptops) that getting 190 Mbps out of a raw 250 Mbps is good. Some of the bandwidth is being given to other devices and I cannot expect my PC to get the full 250 Mbps during a speed test from speedtest.net

Wanted to share the results and feedback I got from the Linksys award winning technical support.

So, did you return it yet? :)

No way this falls into the realm of 'works as advertised'.

I don't buy it. You should not loose 60mbps just out of the blue like that.
That is a lot of bandwidth. A router of that class should do 250mbs without a hiccup.
I would kill the wi-fi and only plug your computer to the router and do a speedtest. make sure you eliminate the other devices that could be chewing 60 mbps and then see what you get.
if you are still missing that much bandwidth then get rid of the router while you still can.
I would get a 88u or ac-5300 monster router :) for similar price or + a few dollars. better features and it can take the punishment of over 20 devices and your bandwidth.
think about it, that's a lot of cash to spend on a product that doesn't stand up to its features.

Linksys media prioritzation is a bit odd - and like the support person suggested, it does reserve bandwidth... it's default is off, however, and if enabled, it should be manually set to 95 percent of max WAN side thruput...
