Super slow web GUI remotely

Router Model Affected:
Models: TUF-AX5400 V1

Firmware Version Affected:
3004.388.9_2-gnuton2, 3004_388.9_2-gnuton2_beta1, 3004_388.9_2-gnuton1…etcc

Describe:

Accessing my router’s web interface remotely is extremely slow — loading a single page takes ~6 minutes on average, and sometimes up to 14 minutes, making it nearly unusable.

  • Router is overseas (500 Mbps up/down).
  • From the U.S., I tested:
    1. VPN in and speed test → ~450 Mbps, so bandwidth is fine. Latency is 200–350 ms (avg ~220 ms).
    2. Tried FreshTomato and DD-WRT, the web GUI loads normally and much faster.
    3. VPN into Merlin router → access 192.168.1.1 → still very slow.
    4. Direct DDNS remote access → same issue.
    5. Use SSH it seems normal

Expected behavior:

Any way to improve/optimize the GUI speed for remote access or VPN in?

My remote system is 9500kms away. I vaguely recall having possibly a similar issue, might be worth checking out, although I’m sure the purists will scream b,ie murder for security reasons.

IIRC it all came down to using https vs http for access. This is what I ended up using and it was way better (faster). HTH.
