The three new models, including the DS218play, DS218j and DS118, are updated versions of previous small office/home office DiskStation products, and run Synology’s DiskStation Manager web-based operating system.
The dual-bay DS218play follows up on the DS216play and is powered by a 64-bit Realtek quad-core 1.4 GHz processor w/ encryption engine and 1 GB of DDR4 RAM. The processor has a hardware transcoding engine that supports real-time single channel 10-bit H.265 4K Ultra HD or single channel full HD video transcoding. Available inputs include one GbE jack and two USB 3.0 ports.
Synology’s DS218j is another dual-bay NAS that replaces the DS216j. DS218j runs on a Marvell Armada dual-core 1.3 GHz processor w/ encryption engine and 512 MB of DDR3 memory. Designed to be a low power unit, the DS218j runs at 17.48 W at peak usage and 7.03 at hibernation. Available inputs include one GbE jack and two USB 3.0 ports.
The third SOHO product is the single-bay DS118. A successor to the DS116, the DS118 runs on the same Realtek quad-core 1.4 GHz processor w/ encryption engine as the DS218play and uses 1 GB of DDR 4 RAM. DS118 also supports 4K H.265 hardware video transcoding. Available inputs include one GbE jack and two USB 3.0 ports.
