I'd wait for a review from someone credible if I were you. "Trustedreviews" puts up a good front, the website is pretty, but in fact many of their reviews lack rigorur and credibility.

For example, if you bought a digital camera or a mobile from from their reviews, youd find yourself holdng a POS and wondering what happened. They basically say more or less what most adverisers - or the retailers that lend them the products to review - want to be said.

And certainly when it comes to NAS I would look for a review from a proper specialist.

I hear ya. I've found Trustedreviews.com reviews to be hit and miss. Well, I find that to be the case with many review oriented websites. Sometimes its "vendor motivation", other times the reviewer misses something, etc..

Nevertheless, Trustedreviews noted the max throughput and real world throughput with small files and it got me intrigued to see more. Its nice to see that the DS-209+ is actually real in the wild. Hopefully Tim will get his hands on one soon.

BTW, I'm still a Readynas fan due to my familiarity with them, their strong reliability, and the strong support and user group. I continue to steer away from Synology and stay with the Readynas product for those very reasons. The DS-209+ was the first Synology product I thought I'd try to see if Synology can win me over. But you're correct and I'm not jumping until I get to see more on this product from reliable sources.

Newegg has the 209+ in stock. $150 more than the 207+. Now we need Tim to tell us if its a worthwhile $150 upgrade!!

One of the things that concerns me with the Synology products is that they seem to be very fickle with harddisks. Synology seems to have a larger approved list for the x08/09 NAS boxes (probably due to them using a better SATA controller/hardware design) but I've already found a user on the Synology forums claiming he's having hell with the WD Green Power drives. I am aware that at first most NAS makers did not recommend this series of disk due to the high load/unload cycling but in recent months Synology has actually embraced this drive and in the forums their moderators recommend it to most peoples asking "which drive is best?". Plus its on their approved list for the x07/x08/x09 models.

If you poke around enough, its hard to find more than a couple drive models that everyone says works well with the Synology products. Eek.

Also, a new issue cropped up with Synology products that is upsetting Linux users. This could be problematic for anyone using rsync.

One last thing, why does Qnap get a special forum on smallnetbuilder but not Synology or Netgear?

I created the Qnap forum due to the many posts on the TS-509 Pro. If there enough posts on other manufacturers' products, I can/will create forums for them.

Basically, this is a two-drive DS408, with about 2X read/write performance of any other 2 drive NAS in the charts.

Any guess how a Readynas Duo would perform if it had 1GB RAM? Do you think that would close the gap in real world use?

I may try the 209+. Its too hard to pass up due to its performance. I hope my experience with their OS doesn't leave me disappointed.

Bought QNAP 209 II last saturday... RW/s rate is about 12M/sec

So I contacted Qsupport. (he is very nice indeed) and ask for the reference speed of what normal QNAP should be.

he kindly redirect me to small net builder .. and I find that DS209+ is twice as fast as QNAP 209II on paper. (and 50% more expensive)

So I bought DS209+ yesterdsay and now current speed is 32.6M write, with most function turned except appletalk.

my configration:
Asus P5Q - Asus gigbat switch - DS209+ , all cat 6

so? my opninon is QNAP is best for my office still running 100 mbit backbone.
DStation is best for my home , which fully wired gigabit network

You would probably just see the read dropoff point move out to the same as the 209+

I grabbed the image directly from the Synology User Manual. They use that picture to represent all their two bay products since the controls are the same.

Most discussions in different forums refer to the NAS charts here as a reference for comparison, and it's a pity that these two current models are missing from the list

I asked Synology yesterday to send a 209+II. Unfortunately, they told me that they won't send any more of their "09" models for test because they feel that their "core strength is our software".

Hi all

How long will I have to wait for a "new" DS409+ review?

I have one unit, with the new incredible Synology DSM 2.2-0942 firmware, the reading speed (with jumbo 9K and RAID5 and very large files) has been increased from 55-60 MB/s to 85-90 MB/s.

It's really really fast !!!
