Trending Content: what is the algorithm?

What determines if something is trending? Can’t be recent posts since most of these are locked and dormant. Are bots reading them and making them trend? Or is this feature not really working?

The settings are pretty close to what the default values are in the documentation.

I guess this was one of the arguments for limiting the mega-threads several years ago. They’re still “trending” five years later due to reply counts.

Trends are probably global, which means none of the newer threads are getting enough views and new replies to get higher on the list.

The forums did get quieter these past few weeks.

What gets me is four of the five listed threads have had zero activity in years. The only thread that makes sense in that list is your own firmware thread @RMerlin
I understand the situation though. If those threads are manually removed what other irrelevant threads are going to show up. How far down the rabbit hole does this go?
How hard is it to disable this useless plugin?

The weights could possibly be adjusted, but I doubt it's a priority for @thiggins . Personally I never even noticed there was a Trending widget on the forums until mentionned here.
