Hi everyone. noob problem here.
Ok. I have two asus rt n56u routers.I want to use the second n56u as a repeater for the primary router(n56u) I have flashed open wrt and padavan on the second router trying to use it as a repeater.I have changed different settings trying to do this but no luck.I just the second router to original firmware and it automatically connected to the first router and I have internet.I have both the radios on my laptop turned off.The ethernet cable is connected to the second router and my laptop. The primary router is in the other room connected to the modem. Why is it connecting right after flash and without me having to set the password to access primary router.Since they are identical routers,I assume they are using the same ip address. 192.168.1.1.I was using an older wrt54g router dd wrt as a repeater and set it up easily. The only problem was my internet speed was horrible in the living room(20mbs)max. Without using any repeater my internet speed in the living room is about 16mbs max.In the room where the primary(n56u) router is my speed is about 80mbs.Now I am getting about 80mbs in the living room(laptop connected to second n56u router through ethernet cable both wifi radios on laptop turned off) Can't figure this out.

I have a 56U (Asus firmware .3754) connected by ethernet to a 66U(tomatoUSB-Shibby 131) which is connected to the ISP's modem. The 56U is servicing a PC and a Raspi thru a switch and a Sony BluRay player plugged directly into a LAN port on the 56U. All connect and work nicely but you should change the IP on the second router to something other than 192.168.1.1, such as 192.168.2.1 so you can access the web interfaces separately. I have not done speed tests on the 56U but my ISP speed testing done through the PC is normal (testmy.net). I have not addressed the issue of having two NAT connections as I had some problems with this when I messed with it. I don't think any of the routers require a password to connect to the net or each other, but you will need to use one to access the web interface to perform any changes or setup. Change the default passwords and usernames ASAP, especially on the internet facing router.

I finally got the second n56u to connect wirelessly to the primary n56u(connected to modem).I have the second n56u in my living room with an ethernet cable to my htpc.I am getting about 60mbs down this way.Good enough for streaming.I haven't been able to get the second n56u to broadcast wirelessly though.OPEN WRT was the only one I was able to do this and still keep it password protected.Stock firmware only allows you to do it on open system. You were correct with setting 192.168.2 .All the othe instructions I ended up with ip conflicts.
