Understanding guest network pro

Hi all, just upgraded ax6000 to 3006 without any issue. Not really a pro here but need some help trying to set up the guest network for IOT.

In 3004, I had already setup guest network for iot and restrict access to intranet. I did not create a vlan so I’m not sure if it’s on a separate vlan.

After upgrading to 3006, I notice this iot said is on a separate vlan (which is good as that’s what is intended right?).

Question then would be, do I need to re setup the guest network or just stick to the current?
I also saw in the new guest network pro, there is this option “different subnet “. What’s the difference between subnet and vlan?

My goal here is to have iot on a separate ssid that have no access to the main network. Yes I know some iot needs to be in the same (vlan?subnet?), for casting etc. in which case, I will move those to the main network.

Thanks.

The general recommendation is to reset the router to factory defaults after upgrading from 3004 to 3006 and start clean with manual re-configuration including Guest Networks.

I have found that there is generally no reason to factory reset, having upgrade multiple networks from 3004 to 3006 — the majority use the GT-AX6000 as primary router (plus one RT-AX86U Pro). The upgrade procees carries over settings of guest networks in place. You can fine tune them as needed to segregate (or not) to meet your own needs.

so was the vlan being introduced in 3004 or was it created in 3006 when i did the upgrade?

For guest network 1, they were in the background for v3004 with preassigned VLANs 102 and 103 for 2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively. With v3006, they are available and configurable for ALL guest networks.

Reading through this thread may answer some questions as it provides a lot of background: Switch capabilities of AiMesh nodes?.
