Hi, I am looking to move to a setup based on unifi for my home network. my current setup look like this:
- ISP modem/router - internet access, DHCP/NAT, Wifi AP ground floor
- Main office GB switch (D-link DGS-1016D)
- Living room small GB switch (D-link DGS-1008D) - connects living room streamers/TV etc
- 1st floor Router (bridge mode)/AP 1st floor - connects 1st floor console, streamer
The living room and 1st floor switch/router are currently hanging from the ISP modem/router (due to cabling limitations - the main switch is a bit too far). The HW replacement will also be the opportunity to redo at least part of the current cabling. I am looking to get Unifi for several key reasons:
- Single pane for the full LAN
- Additional networking elements I need in order to move to a proper enterprise (small office) grade like firewalling.
- APs can be located on the ceiling which I believe will enable me to optimize location and coverage as currently I have a couple of blind spots in the house
- Cost compared to any other solution - a USG + 2 APs will cost me the same as a pair of netgear Orbis for example.
My questions:
- is there any disadvantage in taking the smaller USG compared to the larger PRO version?
- For better result do I need also the Unifi switches (which are very expensive), or I can stay with cheaper switches? For the main switch downstairs I guess I will need a POE switch to feed the APs, but there are cheaper options?
- do you recommend any other setup that will deliver better results?
