New Around Here
Hi
I currently run Asus RT-87U running Merlin firmware, and it is good, however it is approaching end of life , Merlin doesn't support it any more, and I have come into a bit of money
I like the Merlin f/w, so would prefer to stay in that ecosystem.. so
what is the advised router for me?
I have Cable internet (300Mps)
a fair number of internet of things, smart home devices, a smallish property and no-one is a hard core gamer. I have about £250 ish to spend..was thinking the Rt Ac 88 or the 5300..any thoughts?

The RT-AC86U, RT-AX88U, and the RT-AX86U are the models to choose from today.

The latter being the superior one, by far.

Even for 'just' 300 Mbps ISP service (today).

I would not consider the models you name at all.

I'd agree with L&LD that the RT-AC88U and RT-AC5300 would be bad choices. Both of those router designs are only one year younger than your current model at 2015 vs. 2014.

At £250 the RT-AX86U is at the top end of your price range. But if you can wait for it to go on sale it could be a good choice. It can occasionally be had for ~£210.
