Upgrading FW question

In the past, Ive always just gone into the router setup, loaded up the new firmware, flashed, and was off to the races. Lately I've read you are suppose to do a factory default reset either before or after a flash? And I've read of doing a 30/30/30 either before or after a flash. Which is the prefered method?

I just upgraded this morning and did the above + did a factory reset just in case. Probably overkill but I figure an hour to setup everything again is worth avoiding any potential future quirkiness.

I just take screen shots of all my settings before upgrading.
