What's the next upgrade from a Asus RT-AX88U to a small business grade router with POE jacks. Upgrading a home network to run POE powered devices phones and cameras. Is a upgraded wi fi router with POE jacks the next step, or should I just run a POE switch?

Currently running Cox internet with a CM8200 run to a RT-AX88U. Looking at adding an unmanaged POE switch to the modem, then plugging the wi fi router and POE devices into the switch. Other option is a wi fi router with POE jacks.

Unless your ISP provides you with multiple IP addresses you can only connect one host device to the cable modem, usually a router. Even if your ISP did allow multiple devices you really don't want your PoE devices connected directly to the internet.

Yeah, putting a switch upstream of your router is not sane --- if it works at all, it will let every bad guy on the net into your house. Adding a switch downstream of the router is perfectly sensible though, if you've run out of LAN ports on the router. You haven't said anything suggesting that the AX88U isn't meeting your needs WiFi-wise, so I can't see that replacing it will be cost-effective. Just buy an unmanaged POE-capable switch and plug it into the router. (Even that may be overkill; if you have just one or two devices needing POE, it might be cheaper to use individual POE injectors.)
